So You Have a 3D Printer
Now What?!

Purchasing a 3D printer is the beginning of a major learning and tinkering experience. Just settling on what kind of printer to buy can be an endeavor. The Mayerthorpe Public Library will be offering an introduction to this hobby that will include an introduction to the basic mechanical functioning of a printer, the software required to operate it, the software to convert a proper design to gcode for printing and an introduction to a free CAD design software program called FreeCAD.

This 4 evening course will use a Creality Ender 3, the most popular low cost higher quality 3D printer available, but will be applicable to most other printers as well.

Your design must be “sliced” into layers for printing. We will be using a slicing program called Cura.

The final key to enjoying your new hobby is feeling the satisfaction of being able to print out your own designs. We will use a program called FreeCAD to create an object for printing.

Who are these evening classes for? Someone who is comfortable transferring files to usb sticks and not too afraid to download and run a program. You may wish to bring a laptop to follow along.

In 4 evenings we will look at printer setup, file preparation and design. This will just be a beginning but as we will meet once a week there will be time to practice at home, too.
